Nevada State Flag

Nevada's official flag was adopted on March 26, 1929, but was revised on June 8, 1991. The flag has a deep blue background. It pictures a yellow, flowing ribbon that reads "BATTLE BORN." A five-pointed silver star and the words NEVADA are under the ribbon. These are surrounded by green sagebrush with yellow flowers.

Sagebrush is Nevada's state flower. The silver star represents the rich mineral wealth of Nevada, especially the famous Comstock lode (discovered in 1859), which is one of the largest silver and gold mines ever found. The words "Battle Born" on Nevada's flag allude to fact that Nevada bacame a state during the Civil War.

Nevada Retirement - Reno - Sparks

The biggest factor for retirees moving to Reno is the friendliness of the area's residents. Next would be the beautiful scenery, mild climate, and convenient transportation. Average temperatures range from winter lows in the 20's to summer highs in the 90's.

Just five miles from Reno, Sparks has been reported as the fastest growing city in Nevada for the period 1999 - 2008.

The Nevada city of Sparks is located in the Truckee Meadows of northwestern Nevada between the Carson and Virginia Mountain Ranges. Only 4 miles east of Reno and about 12 miles from the California border, Sparks is situated at an elevation of 4,500 feet. Although originally distinct from Reno, the city has grown close to its western neighbor to the point where today they are often referred to as a twin city ("Reno-Sparks").

While the Nevada retirement lifestyle mainstay of no income tax for the state of Nevada looms big in the minds of retirees, retirees may also be drawn by the cultural and sporting events of the University of Nevada at Reno or to the many outdoor recreational activities within a short driving distance. Within an hours drive one can find the enchanting sights of the amazing Sierra Nevada mountains and the ever popular and relaxing area of Lake Tahoe.

While snow skiing, relaxing on the lake, or hiking mountain trails may cause the outdoor enthusiast's mouth to water, there are many opportunities for those that desire the more relaxed nature of a good round of golf. And, of course, the lure of the casinos is close at hand.

Whether seeking a place to retire or a place for a superb vacation, Rocking Chair Wisdom recommends taking a look at this northwestern corner of Nevada. The beauty of the scenery throughout the Sierra Nevada mountains via California state highway 395 is certainly worth the road trip.
