A corporate gift for a retiring employee?

Rocking Chair Wisdom previously mentioned corporate gift giving as one of at least three groups that will be involved in gift giving to the retiree. On this page we will stress:

Corporate gift giving for retirement

When a corporation or an organization is considering giving a corporate retirement gift to an employee that is leaving after a number of years of dedicated serice, it should take into account the following guidelines when determining the appropriate gift:
  • The gift giving should be done in a professional and businesslike manner. If there is a written policy, it should be followed.
  • The gift should not be able to be construed as compensation for work perfomed but should convey an acknowledgement and appreciation for the commitment that was provided by the retiring employee.
  • The gift should fit within the organization's budget for such items and should be commensurate with the employee's years of service and position within the organization.
  • The gift may include the organization's logo but it should not be placed in such a manner to be considered advertising or publicity. Hopefully, the retiree has had a wholesome relationship with his or her organization and would proudly display the gift acknowleging the organization from which it came.

What to give?

  • Retiring Board of Director - any kind of executive gift such as leather portfolios, desk clocks, and fine writing instruments.
  • Retiring employees - keeping within the organization's budgetary constraints, these retirement gifts could be most anything. However, traditionally they are gifts that bear some meaning to the recipient in relationship to the organization to which they have given so many years. Along with the usual certificate of appreciation, perhaps a digital picture frame or scrapbook with significant highlights of their career. Gifts could also reflect something about the unique culture of the area where the employee has spent their time, such as piece of artwork attributed to the area.
  • One general guideline that should be used is that any corporate retirement gift giving program should be consistent so that no one employee feels less appreciated than another by the corporation. Depending upon the organization, there may be merit to giving the gift in a public setting. By doing this, the outgoing employee can be afford the ability to say good bye to those they may not see idividually.

There is no exact rule of thumb. We must determine our budget and to whom the gift is being given. We should be creative and choose a gift that the recipient knows we spent a little time thinking about and that it isn't something thrown together from the warehouse.
